The Leeds School of Business has a great program where students are able to take a course in Project Management to prepare for the Project Management Professional exam. The course also gives students opportunities to work with local business leaders to create and execute a project.
As a mentor with the program, I was assigned a team of MBA or undergraduate students each semester. I helped them develop project plans, resource plans, outlines for information interviews, communications, and presentations to deliver to their sponsoring company. Project teams proposed plans involving:
Every holiday season, the Salvation Army and members of communities team together to provide gifts for local children whose families may not be able to provide the toy truck, the new sweater, the colored pencils, or the mittens that the children would like to have. For six years, I was able to volunteer as a coordinator for the Salvation Army.
My involvement included picking up tags with gift requests, finding volunteers who wanted to shop for the item on the tag, collecting gifts, taking the items to the Salvation Army for distribution, and organizing teams to sort and pack gifts in the warehouse.
It was very rewarding both to know that children would be having a warmer holiday, and that an opportunity was created for people to get involved in their community.
